Cardboard II is a series of works that are basically an extension of the much smaller Cardboard paintings I made in 2023.
As my practice continues, I feel more strongly drawn to using cardboard as one of my chief mediums. I find the material so interesting to play with, cutting, layering and gluing the pieces together to form these asymmetrical shapes, which makes me think of this uneasy relationship with the disposability of consumer-driven markets and our obsession with packaging.
In this respect, I am very inspired by the work of artists such as El-Anatsui and Louise Bourgeouis, and other folk and outsider artists, who use and incorporate recycled and found objects in their work.

For me, the cardboard represents the outer shell, or exoskeleton, of human desire. It was the vessel that carried all these objects of want, and discarded after use. There’s a poignancy there that speaks to me.
These paintings were shown in my fourth solo show All Life is Recycled + Time is a Donut, at Temu House, Kuala Lumpur, in June 2025.
